On Thursday, August 26th 2021, the Always Be Coaching webinar and podcast series hosted the webinar, “Carrying the Torch - Coaching Lessons from the World of Sports”.
In this fourth session of the webinar + podcast series we heard from Ethan Barhydt and former athlete turned business leader, Hallie Preston Greene as they explored how the key elements of great coaching span the worlds of both sports and business.
The main topics covered in this session include:
Commonalities between athletes and call center teams
What do athletes and call center teams have in common? Good coaching makes a big difference. Whether on a collegiate level sports team or the call center floor, trust, commitment, and authenticity must be combined to achieve great coaching. In both sports and business, successful coaches must be genuinely interested in their teams success, committed to each individual, and earn and maintain the teams full trust.
Coaching as your authentic self
No matter the setting, authenticity is key to coaching success. We all naturally form stronger connections with the coaches who are authentic in their coaching styles and remain true to themselves versus the coaches who are clearly trying to mimic someone else.
Behavior-based coaching in the sport of rowing
We’ve talked about behavior-based coaching in relation to call center teams in the past. But sports teams also see success in identifying and coaching to specific behaviors for improved performance. In this session, Hallie speaks to the importance of leveraging data and technology to identify an individual’s strengths & weaknesses, picking out a couple of key behaviors to focus on, and then creating an open dialogue between coach and athlete to align on goals.
